Есть такая утилитка - gtf:
gtf
usage: gtf x y refresh [-v|--verbose] [-f|--fbmode] [-x|--xorgmode]
x : the desired horizontal resolution (required)
y : the desired vertical resolution (required)
refresh : the desired refresh rate (required)
-v|--verbose : enable verbose printouts (traces each step of the computation)
-f|--fbmode : output an fbset(8)-style mode description
-x|--xorgmode : output an Xorg-style mode description (this is the default
if no mode description is requested)
Пользоваться так:
$ gtf 1024 768 85
# 1024x768 @ 85.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 68.60 kHz; pclk: 94.39 MHz
Modeline "1024x768_85.00" 94.39 1024 1088 1200 1376 768 769 772 807 -HSync +Vsync
Полученную строку Modeline просто прописываем в секцию Monitor, согласно man 5 xorg.conf:
Specifying video modes is optional because the server will use the DDC or other information provided by the monitor to automatically configure the list of modes available. When modes are specified explicitly in the Monitor section (with the Mode, ModeLine, or UseModes keywords), built-in modes with the same names are not included. Built-in modes with different names are, however, still implicitly included, when they meet the requirements of the monitor.
Истинный hotplug - это обычная электрическая розетка: воткнул - работает, и никаких драйверов.
